The Political Science Program of the National Science Foundation supports annual four-week summer institutes on Empirical Implications of Theoretical Models. Previous summer institutes have taken place at Harvard (2002), Michigan (2003, 2006, 2009), Duke (2004, 2008, 2014), UC Berkeley (2005, 2010, 2013), UCLA (2007), the University of Chicago (2011), and Princeton (2012).

 

The EITM Summer Institute is a highly collegial training program for advanced graduate students and junior faculty. It is led by political scientists from across the discipline who employ various EITM approaches in their research.  Each summer institute combines lectures on various facets of EITM with extensive and individualized mentoring opportunities. Participants have opportunities to present their current research and enhance future research agendas through many interactions with EITM’s faculty, mentors, and fellow participants. These experiences and activities provide participants with a far wider and deeper array of EITM mentors than is available at any individual institution.

 

In the 2015 version of EITM, we are introducing several new elements. First, the summer institute will be three weeks in length from June 22 – July 11, 2015. It will include a three day introduction to EITM and its associated methods, followed by dynamic three-day modules on EITM approaches in American Politics, Comparative Politics, and International Relations, respectively. The 2015 Institute will conclude with a combination of conference panels and small working groups in which participants and leading EITM practitioners and Summer Institute participants exchange proposals and ideas. As a bonus for participants who are also interested in the ICPSR summer institute, EITM’s ending date is at a time that will allow interested participants to stay in Ann Arbor and take classes in ICPSR’s second summer session. The session also ends in time to allow participants to attend the 2015 Summer Methods Meeting in Rochester.

This summer's institute will accept advanced graduate students, post-doctoral research fellows, and junior faculty through a competitive selection process. There are no fees or tuition. Lodging, meals and domestic travel expenses will be provided for participants through a grant from the National Science Foundation. EITM institutes are selective, with admission based significantly on the quality and potential of research presented.
